Bermondsey Square, White Hart Dock and Sackler Studios shortlisted for London Planning Awards

The London Planning Awards are the capital's major showcase for planning in both the public and private sectors.

"In addition to extremely high design standards, a commitment to improve the quality of life in London also shines out from this year's shortlist," says Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

"I am particularly pleased to see the emphasis placed on improving our green and open public spaces, which are vital to my vision for London to become the world's best big city."

Bermondsey Square is shortlisted in the best public space category where its competitors include the new diagonal crossings at Oxford Circus.

The landscaped open space at Bermondsey Square continues to house the Friday morning antiques market as well as the Saturday morning farmers' market which is now celebrating its first birthday.

Initiatives such as the public table tennis table – installed for the Ping! London festival and now a long-term fixture – have helped to bring life to the space.

This is not the first time that the Bermondsey Square development has been up for a London Planning Award – it was on the shortlist for the first set of awards in 2003 before work had even started.

The public art around White Hart Dock on Albert Embankment has been shortlisted in the best built project – community-scale scheme category.

It is a year since the completion of the £90,000 project to install public art around the historic draw-dock next to the Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel.

Shakespeare's Globe's new Sackler Studios complex is up for an award in the best historic building management category.

An old warehouse at the corner of Park Street and Bear Gardens has been transformed into a new rehearsal and education centre. The Duke of Edinburgh will visit Bankside next week to open the new building.

All shortlisted entries will go forward to the London Planning Awards ceremony on 20 January at City Hall where winners will be announced by the Boris Johnson and Deputy Mayor Sir Simon Milton.
